Waste & Recycling Operator

Reports to: Supervisor Waste and Recycling

Salary Range: $1,008 - $1,151 per 38 hour week with a monthly RDO + superannuation


As Waste & Recycling Operator, you will safely and competently operate Council plant and equipment and undertake general duties in the recycling area. This will include inspecting and regulating loads entering waste facilities, directing members of the public to the correct areas of waste facilites and promoting recycling of eligible waste materials. You will undertake gate duties and Container Deposit Scheme (over the counter) activities at Coonabarabran waste and recycling centre, including cash receipting of fees from customers and reconciling daily takings. You will also be required to relocate cardboard from Council’s other waste transfer stations to Coonabarabran Waste Facility for processing and to relieve on the garbage truck as required, so an HR licence is essential.

As part of our dedicated waste and recycling team, you will work to provide and maintain a safe work environment and promote and maintain a positive image of Council to the community.

Essential Requirements

  • Commitment to Council’s Mission, Values and Code of Conduct
  • Understanding of work health and safety (WHS) in the workplace and commitment to a positive contribution to WHS in the workplace and compliance with Council and legislative requirements
  • Occupational Health and Safety Construction Induction certificate (“white card”)
  • WorkCover Forklift Ticket
  • Sound verbal and written communication skills required to:
    • Communicate effectively with members of the public, 
    • Complete risk assessments and timesheets
  • Cash handling ability including ability to reconcile gate takings
  • Counting and record keeping ability to administer Container Deposit Scheme counter
  • Class HR NSW Drivers Licence.

Desirable Requirements

  • Knowledge of Waste facility operations
  • Verification of Competency (VOC) for Skid Steer Loader (Bobcat) Ticket
  • Telehandler gold ticket
  • Knowledge of Council fees and charges, and Container Deposit Scheme activities
  • Knowledge of waste management recycling principles
